Memphis Area Women's Council gives voice to needs of local women and girls - striving for change to assure equity, safety and justice. 15 years - initiatives range from banning corporal punishment in schools to leadership program for girls to reforms in Orders of Protection process to reforms in rape crisis services to creation of a domestic violence court to Run Women Run training events for female candidates and Women Vote rallies.
Current initiatives include:
- workshops to equip employers/workplaces on how to recognize and respond to domestic violence among employees and colleagues - nearly 1000 trained so far
- Roll Red Roll documentary as basis for awareness programs on college campuses toward preventing sexual assaults - four campuses and one community screening this year
- Memphis Says NO MORE campaign to end domestic violence and sexual assault with newest phase aimed at teens and local schools
- NINTH annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes - the men's march to stop rape, battering and sexual harassment on SEPT. 25 from University of Memphis
- Creation of the Memphis Women's Legacy Trail, a guide to places where Memphis women stood up and stood out under our Women of Achievement program
- a "safe tent" at Memphis music fest for second year - outreach by Memphis Says NO MORE to share resources and provide on-site trauma counseling as needed Oct. 19-20
